Personalised care
Every treatment plan starts with you: your concerns, your goals, your medical history and your skincare routine.
Aesthetics • Wellness • Confidence
At The Aesthetic Atelier, every treatment begins with understanding you, your skin and your goals. Subtle, personalised and preventative aesthetic medicine and wellness in Somerset West, with Dr Carlien Neethling.
Our philosophy
“My philosophy is simple: refresh and rejuvenate, rather than change.”
Our approach is subtle, personalised and preventative; focused on maintaining healthy skin, restoring what has been lost with time, and enhancing your natural features without compromising what makes you, you.
Every treatment plan starts with you: your concerns, your goals, your medical history and your skincare routine.
Rested, healthy and naturally enhanced; the best version of yourself, never “had work done”.
Healthy skin is something we should invest in at every stage of life, starting with what your skin needs.

Outside of The Aesthetic Atelier, I'm a wife and a mom. When I'm not working, you'll usually find me outdoors. I love running, hiking and spending time in nature. I also love being in the kitchen; especially cooking and baking birthday cakes for the people I love.
About
Welcome to The Aesthetic Atelier. I'm Dr Carlien Neethling, a medical doctor with a passion for helping people look and feel refreshed, confident and beautifully themselves.
I qualified with my MBChB from the University of Pretoria in 2016, before completing my internship at Victoria Hospital in Wynberg and my community service in the Madibeng Subdistrict in the North West Province.
Over the years, my medical career has taken me through many different areas of medicine. I have worked as a general practitioner, in emergency units, trauma and COVID-19 intensive care, as well as in microbiology laboratories. Each experience has shaped me as a doctor and given me a broad understanding of health and the human body. But throughout it all, I always knew where my true passion lay: skin, skincare and aesthetics.
I completed my first aesthetic medicine course in 2019 and have continued to expand my knowledge and skills through numerous additional courses and training. For several years, aesthetics was something I combined with other areas of medicine, but for the past two years, I have dedicated my practice exclusively to aesthetics.
I believe that good aesthetic medicine should be subtle, thoughtful and individualised. I don't want my patients to look like they have “had work done”. I want them to look rested, healthy and naturally enhanced; like the best version of themselves.
Healthy skin starts from the inside. This is why I have a particular interest in gut health, nutrition and the connection between internal health and the skin.
I never want a patient to simply sit back and have a treatment done without understanding what we are doing and why.

Questions
There is no specific age at which you need to start taking care of your skin. Healthy skin is something we should invest in at every stage of life.
For younger patients, the focus is often on establishing good skincare habits, protecting the skin and maintaining its health. As we age, our approach may evolve to include treatments aimed at preventing and addressing signs of ageing.
My philosophy is always to start with what your skin needs, rather than treating simply because you can.
Many aesthetic treatments involve needles, but most procedures are very well tolerated. Your comfort is important to me, and I will guide you through the process so that you know what to expect at every step.
Where appropriate, we can also use different techniques or methods to make your experience as comfortable as possible.
You can exercise before your appointment, but I recommend avoiding strenuous exercise for 24 hours after your treatment.
Depending on the treatment you’ve had, you may receive additional aftercare instructions, which I will discuss with you before you leave.
Yes. Your first appointment is an opportunity for us to discuss your concerns, goals, medical history and skincare routine.
I believe in creating individualised treatment plans, rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach. Sometimes the best treatment may be a procedure, while other times it may simply be improving your skincare or making a few lifestyle changes.
Absolutely not; unless that is specifically what you are looking for.
My aesthetic philosophy is centred around refreshing and rejuvenating, not changing. I aim for results that look natural and leave you looking like yourself; just more rested, refreshed and confident.
Treatment times vary depending on the procedure and your individual treatment plan. When booking, you will be given an indication of how much time to allow for your appointment.
I also don’t like to rush appointments. Taking the time to assess, explain and treat carefully is an important part of the process.
This depends entirely on the treatment. Some treatments produce an immediate improvement, while others work gradually as your skin responds and regenerates.
At your appointment, I will explain when you can expect to see your results and what changes are normal during the healing process.
There isn’t one answer for every treatment. Results can last anywhere from several weeks to many months or longer, depending on the procedure, your individual response, lifestyle and skincare.
Where relevant, I will discuss maintenance treatments with you so that we can create a plan that works for you.
Some aesthetic treatments are not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Your safety always comes first, so please let me know if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning a pregnancy when we discuss your treatment options.
Skincare should be personalised to your skin, not based on what is trending on social media.
During your consultation, we can look at your current routine, your skin concerns and what your skin actually needs. I will recommend products based on your individual goals rather than simply adding more products to your shelf.
This depends on the treatment and the products you are using. Certain active ingredients may need to be paused before or after specific procedures.
Don’t worry; I will give you clear pre- and post-treatment instructions so you know exactly what to do.
This depends on the treatment you’ve had. For some procedures, makeup can be applied relatively soon afterwards, while others require you to allow the skin some time to recover.
I will always give you specific aftercare instructions following your treatment.
That’s what your consultation is for.
You don’t need to arrive knowing exactly what treatment you want. Tell me what bothers you, what you’d like to improve and what kind of result you’re hoping for.
Together, we’ll decide what is appropriate for you; and sometimes the answer may be no treatment at all.
Yes. Aesthetic medicine is for anyone who wants to look after their skin and feel confident in themselves.
Treatments are always tailored to the individual, taking into consideration differences in skin, facial structure and aesthetic goals.
Before any treatment, we will discuss realistic expectations, possible risks and what results can and cannot be achieved.
My aim is always to create natural, considered results, and your concerns are important to me. If you have any concerns following a treatment, I encourage you to contact me so that we can assess the situation and determine the appropriate next step.
Not necessarily.
I don’t believe you should have treatments simply because you feel you should. Your treatment plan should be based on your skin, your goals and what is appropriate for you at that particular stage of your life.
If you are currently using skincare products, it is helpful to bring a list or photographs of the products you use. Please also provide an accurate medical history and let me know about any medications, supplements, allergies or previous aesthetic treatments.
Most importantly, bring your questions. Education is an important part of every treatment at The Aesthetic Atelier.
